At first the name of the station was Mihijam. But when the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works established at chittaranjan, the station's name was change to Chittaranjan station. Geographically this station is located at Mihijam, under Jamtara district of Jharkhand, but the township of Chittaranjan is in West Bengal.
